Elephants show responsibility and leadership

Reminds me of my encounter with a herd of elephants.

I was going from Guwahati to Jorhat in car. Journey takes about 5 to 6 hours. The road is a national highway. For some stretch of the road, Kaziranga National Park lies between this National Highway and Brahmputra river.

Around that stretch of the road, Driver suddenly stopped the car. After a minute, I asked him what has happened. He said the elephants are crossing the road. All traffic from both sides had stopped. I saw the whole herd crossing the road. Perhaps took about 30 minutes.

We waited for some more time and then driver drove slowly.

Now the interesting part.

As we were passing that point of crossing, we saw the leader of the herd, a big elephant standing amongst the trees who had still not crossed the road.

My driver explained that he is the leader and would stand here for some time and cross only when he is sure that the herd is a good distance away from possible harm.

What a leadership!

What a sense of responsibility for the family.

And that too in animals.

Has left an indelible imprint on my mind.

Benefits of structuring your time

Benefits of structuring your time

This short article is for a diverse set of readers who are masters of their time.

You could be
·         a student who is preparing for examination during preparatory leave.
·         a PhD Scholar/ Researcher who is doing a lot of work by herself
·         A self-employed person
·         a Home Maker
·         A retired person
·         anyone whose surroundings are not imposing a time structure

[If you are working in a factory, your work shift starts at a determined time, the break times are fixed, so is the closing time. This is what I mean by your surroundings imposing a time structure on you.]

So you are master of your time. But if you do not act like a master you may not get much out of your time. And the sure way of mastering your time is to structure it.

Hence create a structure

Creating a structure is not difficult. Basic guidelines are

1.      Decide a time when you will sleep off at night. Deciding when to get up is secondary as it depends on when you go to sleep. For younger people this is the biggest roadblock.
2.      Make sure you listen to your body and have full night's sleep.
3.      Get up at a time in the morning so that you are not in a hurry.
4.      If you are self-employed decide your work timings and break timings and stick to them.

Benefits of this structure

·         Your body will develop a biological clock and will create time discipline.
·         People who structure their time live healthier and longer.
·         a person with time structure has a sense of how and where his life is going that provides a sense of direction.
·         This sense of direction creates a sense of purpose. Remember you are the master of your life you can change this direction any time you want. You can also choose a different purpose for your life.

Remember that directionless and purposeless life will a vacuous life and pretty likely the person will regret later in life.

Note: This article is dedicated to my dear friend Dr. V Prakash who is an epitome of structuring his time. He had been my roommate also in HAL Staff College hostel. And I learnt some good habits from him.

Well Being

Every individual desires a state of well being. This is not merely good physical health. There are following dimensions of well being.

1. Physical well being
a. Exercise related
b. Diet related
c. Curative medicines
2. Mental well being
a. Intellectual
b. Emotional
3. Financial or economic well being
4. Social well being
5. Spiritual well being.

Many of us have lopsided self-care. We tend to ignore one or the other dimensions. Reflect: Are you paying full attention to all the dimensions of your well being.

Our Deepest Fear

Our Deepest Fear

Our Deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light not our darkness that frightens us.

We ask ourselves "Who am I to be brilliant gorgeous, talented and fabulous?"

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates other.
