Elephants show responsibility and leadership

Reminds me of my encounter with a herd of elephants.

I was going from Guwahati to Jorhat in car. Journey takes about 5 to 6 hours. The road is a national highway. For some stretch of the road, Kaziranga National Park lies between this National Highway and Brahmputra river.

Around that stretch of the road, Driver suddenly stopped the car. After a minute, I asked him what has happened. He said the elephants are crossing the road. All traffic from both sides had stopped. I saw the whole herd crossing the road. Perhaps took about 30 minutes.

We waited for some more time and then driver drove slowly.

Now the interesting part.

As we were passing that point of crossing, we saw the leader of the herd, a big elephant standing amongst the trees who had still not crossed the road.

My driver explained that he is the leader and would stand here for some time and cross only when he is sure that the herd is a good distance away from possible harm.

What a leadership!

What a sense of responsibility for the family.

And that too in animals.

Has left an indelible imprint on my mind.
